Using AI for learning and study

Responsible ways to use AI for explanations, study plans, practice, brainstorming, and revision without outsourcing your learning.

AI can be a useful study partner when it helps you practise thinking rather than avoid it. It can reframe a difficult explanation, generate practice questions, help organize a study schedule, or provide feedback on clarity. It can also be confidently wrong and may produce work that violates a course policy if submitted as your own.

Ask for explanations at the right level

Name the concept, what you already understand, and exactly where you are stuck. Ask for a worked analogy or a sequence of questions rather than only a final answer. If the explanation uses a new term, request a definition and an example.

Use summaries as maps, not replacements

A summary can help you preview a chapter or revisit a long set of notes. It cannot preserve every caveat, method, or piece of evidence. Build realistic study plans

Brainstorm and improve writing responsibly

Use AI to explore possible angles, test an outline, identify unclear sentences, or ask what evidence a claim still needs. Keep authorship meaningful: make the decisions, write from your understanding, disclose assistance when required, and never submit generated work when the rules forbid it.

  • Ask for questions that expose gaps in your argument.
  • Request feedback tied to a rubric you supply.
  • Check quotations and citations in the original source.
  • Do not use rewriting tools to disguise prohibited generated work.

Verify every answer that matters

Cross-check names, dates, formulas, definitions, and citations against course materials or trusted references. AI can fabricate a plausible-looking citation. If you cannot locate a source yourself, do not cite it. In mathematics or code, test the steps and result rather than trusting fluent reasoning.

Protect people and unpublished work

Do not upload another student’s personal information, confidential research, restricted exam material, or unpublished data without authorization. Remove identifiers where possible. Your institution may have additional rules for approved tools and data handling; follow them.

A simple integrity test

Ask: does this use help me understand, practise, organize, or review—or does it replace the work I am being assessed on? When uncertain, ask the instructor before using it. A lower-tech method that preserves trust is better than a sophisticated workflow that undermines it.
